Good timing is crucial

Build up your credibility by simply asking your manager when is the best times to approach him or her. It will demonstrate your consideration of their busy schedule. Plus, it will mean that when you do meet with them, they are more likely to be focused and listen.


Plan what you want to say

Treat it like a mini interview. Prepare and practice your questions and issues rather than just winging. Be confident when explaining upfront why you’re there and what you need from your manager.


Show initiative

Mangers want to know your own suggestions to resolving an issue. This is a crucial for demonstrating leadership and initiative, which will be noted.


Follow through

You can hold yourself and boss accountable by agreeing on times to follow-up at the conclusion of each meeting. This will put the issue in focus and treat it like a work task.
