Building Surveyor

  • St Helena Island, South Atlantic
  • 6 months FTC starting October 2024
  • £60k pa, pro rata, depending on experience and qualifications

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and remain dependent on UK government aid.

The St Helena Government owns 80% of all property in St Helena, including a number of buildings that are of historical and cultural significance. You will report on the condition of around 30 commercial assets and develop long term maintenance plans for each to ensure the preservation of our built heritage.

As you determine and prepare condition reports for each building you will be required to identify and report on the cause of any defect with recommendations for repair, and forward plan long term preventative maintenance, including costings and scheduled inspections.

In addition to this you may be required to provide technical advice on a range of building matters, including: health and safety; sustainable constructions; energy efficiency; and building pathology, and assist in the design and development of building schemes, in line with local laws and industry best practice.

Some work outside of normal working hours may be required depending on timeframes for reports, and may include working in adverse weather conditions and hazardous environments containing asbestos; paint; flammable liquids; dust and various electrical installations.

Your help in developing the skills and knowledge of the Property and Building Maintenance Teams in condition assessments, forward planning and building pathology will be invaluable, and is essential to developing local team capacity now and in the future.

You must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in property or construction related subjects accredited by RICS, and hold RICS Professional Membership.  You must have substantial experience in building surveying; project management; contract administration and in developing a planned maintenance programme.  A valid driver’s licence is essential and a vehicle will be provided to enable property inspections.

You will be expected to demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork, and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena.
